WFT produces custom Tailored Micro-Diffusers (TMD®) with angles that range from 0.5° to 80° . TMD’s are manufactured using surface relief micro-structures that are embossed from holographically recorded master tools. They allow an almost completely tailorable flux output pattern. Below are some characteristics of TMD’s.

Our TMD® and UTMD product lines accomplish the purpose of traditional diffusers in direct lit and edge-lit Back Light Unit (BLU) systems from Mobil LCD up to large LCD TV/Monitors. However, compared with conventional bead type diffusers, our TMD® in many cases provides the following advantages: higher brightness, better contrast and veiwing angle, less thickness, less layers (such as elimination of diffuser plate and/or prism film. Although BEF and DBEF (which are much more expesive then diffuser) still are the best films for brightness enhancement, our TMD® in some cases can provide a cost effective alternative solution by replacing BEF and DBEF.
TMDs can be easily replicated onto low-cost plastic films. In large quantities, roll-to-roll mass-production techniques insure that WFT’s TMD® costs to OEM manufacturers are well within the range of those for consumer product applications. ULTRATHIN TAILORED MICRO DIFFUSERS (UTMD)
WaveFront Technology, Inc. is proud to announce Ultrathin Tailored Micro Diffuser (UTMD). These are the thinnest diffusers available for portable devices at only 25 microns total thickness. Using our same highly efficient TMD® diffuser, we can now replicate in high volume 1/2 mil PET substrate. UTMDs are replicated via a continous web process at very low costs. These ultrathin diffusers are now being adopted by the portable device marketplace as the next step in achieving light weight and thinner but efficient devices.
